Human

On the surface, they seem wholly unremarkable, but you cannot deny that their adaptability is what makes them fascinating... Aside from their exceptional ability to multiply, of course.

Ranna the Watcher, Of the Huam'in; Observations

Humans (Drannish Huam'in [hʉ-ăm-ĭn], "one(s) from everywhere") are the most prolific race in the Shatterlands.

Description

As they outnumber most other races and are more widespread, humans are considered as an average in most respects.

While ancient humans were known for their exclusivity, in later times they have shown great readiness to interact, mingle, and even cross with non-humans. This is witnessed by the other races with varying degrees of acceptance, disgust or amusement.

Many old human languages bore strong similarities to one another, likely coming from the same roots. The combination of these languages, along with dialects of other races, became modern Commonal.

History

Humans were the largest part of Al Athnar's population since its founding. When most of the Dranning fled from the prophesied cataclysm, there were a significant number of humans among the other races who moved away from the kingdom. Many feared Al Athnar would soon collapse politically, if not physically.

After the Great Shattering, there were many human settlements helping the other races to recover from the worldwide changes. There was a great deal of cultural mingling between them and the Dranning in particular. Not all of humankind viewed "outsiders" so favorably, however, and the disaster served to reinforce this longstanding bigotry. One large following, calling themselves the Inheritors of Al Athnar, believed that the Dranning were directly responsible for the cataclysm. The sect soon took up residence as close to the original location of their "estate" as they could reach.
